Services are available from a few hours a day to 24-hour care. The average minimal shift for in-home care is 4 hours. It is relatively easy to start, modify or end services, which may include:

  • Companionship
  • Activities
  • Bathing/showering
  • Dressing and grooming
  • Hygiene care
  • Toileting/continence care
  • Alzheimer’s and dementia care
  • Mobility assistance
  • Transfers and lifts
  • Medication reminders
  • Transportation/errands
  • Planned outings/appointments
  • Shopping and meal preparation
  • Light housekeeping and laundry
  • Pet care

Costs:

  • $37–$40/hour
  • 8 hours/day: $9,120+ /month
  • 12 hours/day: $13,680+/month
  • 24 hours: $27,360+/month

How services are paid for:

  • Private pay
  • Long-term care insurance (LTC) (may have elimination period)
  • Veterans Aid & Attendance pension
  • Medi-Cal—In Home Supportive Services (IHSS)
