Residential Care/Board & Care Homes

Small Board and Care Homes are also referred to as Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE) for age 60+. These settings provide similar services as Assisted Living facilities in a smaller, home-like setting. The majority of Board and Care Homes are licensed for six residents and offer private and/or shared rooms. These smaller settings are held to the same licensing regulations as larger Assisted Living settings.

  • Typically licensed for 6+ residents
  • Home environment
  • Less activities/socialization
  • 24/7 assistance with personal care
  • Additional oversight
  • More frail population
  • Can provide dementia care in appropriate settings
  • May have awake-at-night staff
  • May have hospice waiver to provide end-of-life care

Costs:

  • Shared room: $3000+/month
  • Private room: $4000+/month
  • Month-to-month rent
  • One-time community fee and/or deposit may be required

How services are paid for:

  • Private pay
  • Long-term care insurance (LTC) (may have elimination period)
  • Veterans Aid & Attendance pension
  • Medi-Cal—Assisted Living Waiver Program (ALWP)
