Intermediate Care

Intermediate Care Facility services emphasize care aimed at preventing or delaying acute episodes of physical or mental illness and encourage each patient's independence to the extent of the patient's ability.

There are very few Intermediate Care Facilities in California anymore as most are being licensed as Skilled Nursing facilities due to Med-Cal's reimbursement rates.

Who Licenses and Regulates Intermediate Care Facilities?
Intermediate Care Facilities are licensed and regulated by the Department of Health Services.

What Level of Care do Intermediate Care Facilities offer?
Intermediate Care Facilities will normally have a Director of Nursing on site 40 hours a week, a Registered Nurse on staff 8 hours a day 5 days a week, and CNA's & LVN's around the clock. To qualify for intermediate care, a patient shall have a medical condition, which needs 24-hour supervision and skilled nursing care or observation on an on-going intermittent basis to abate deterioration.

What payment options do Intermediate Care Facilities accept?
Types of payment are: Private Pay, Med-Cal (share of cost), long term care policies (may have an elimination period), and possibly other policies.
