Residential Care Homes, often referred to as board and care homes, provide the same, non-medical, custodial services as assisted living facilities, but in a smaller, home-like setting. The majority of Residential Care Homes are licensed for six residents and offer private and/or shared rooms. It is important to note that board and care homes are held to the same regulations as larger, assisted settings, despite the differences in licensed capacity.

Who Licenses and Regulates Residential Care Facilities?
- Board and Care

Residential Care Homes are licensed and regulated by the Department of Social Services and are licensed just as a larger assisted living facility.
What Level of Care do Residential Care Facilities offer?
Residential care homes range in the level of care they provide. Many focus on high functioning alert residents, some focus on more frail elderly, some focus on residents with Dementia, and many have a mixed group of residents. Because the high staffing ratio of at least 1:6 or higher many of the smaller care homes can handle a very high level of care and most have a hospice waiver to care for residents throughout their lives. With so many options it's important to have a company like Senior Care Solutions to help assist with finding the right homes to fit your needs.
Residential Care home rates: Most residential care homes have an all inclusive rate that is agreed upon based on the type of room (share or private) and the level of care required. The rates for a shared room range from $1500-$3000+ and the rates for a private range from $2000-$5000+. Clients on hospice are often charged a higher rate due to the care necessary.
What payment options do Residential Care Facilities accept?
Types of payment are: Private Pay, SSI Funds (must qualify) and there are very limited SSI options, long term care policies (may have an elimination period), and possibly other policies.
